## One assistant in chat, answering and acting across connected systems

Moveworks sells a single AI assistant that employees reach where they already work, with two jobs: find content across the systems a company runs, and finish the request. The homepage describes it as searching and acting across business applications, and names the search surface concretely: [Slack, OneDrive, Google Drive, SharePoint, Confluence, Outlook, and 50+ others](https://www.moveworks.com/). The service-desk heritage shows in the documentation, where access requirement guides exist per system for ServiceNow, Jira Service Management, Zendesk, Freshservice, BMC Remedy, Ivanti and ManageEngine, plus identity systems (Okta, Microsoft Entra, Active Directory, SailPoint) and Workday for HR cases.

Four build paths sit behind the assistant. [Tool Studio](https://docs.moveworks.com/tool-studio/overview) distinguishes Search for finding content, Plugins for write actions with business rules enforced, MCP for live reads and reversible actions in productivity apps, and agent-to-agent delegation. The vendor's guidance is that plugins suit mission-critical multi-step workflows and MCP suits bounded lookups, which is a useful sorting rule when scoping a first deployment.

## Pricing is a sales conversation with no published figure

There is no rate card. The [pricing page](https://www.moveworks.com/us/en/pricing) is a form with three talking points: an ROI assessment, scalable packages, and flexible pricing tailored to a buyer's requirements. No seat price, no per-conversation rate, no tier names, no minimums. The only number on the page belongs to a Forrester study the vendor commissioned, quoted as 256% ROI and savings of $11.5M over three years, which is a claim about outcomes rather than a price.

Nothing published says how the contract is metered either, so a buyer cannot tell whether the meter is employees, resolved conversations, or a platform fee with usage on top. No contract length, renewal term or cancellation condition appears: a terms of service page under the legal path returns 404, and the privacy policy page renders only a last-updated line of December 2025 in a browser, so the legal detail a procurement team wants is not on the public site.

## Approval gates sit between the agent and irreversible work

The interesting part of the platform for anyone wary of autonomous agents is where it stops. The [Agentic Orchestrator](https://docs.moveworks.com/harness/agentic-orchestrator/planning) runs each request at the lowest tier that covers it: a direct answer from context, up to three ad hoc tool calls, or a plan the user reviews before anything executes. Destructive, irreversible or broad-reach actions require explicit sign-off, and the documentation states that instructions cannot turn off plan review or the sign-off rule.

The other direction is also documented. Ambient agents run on events and schedules without anyone prompting them, which is what the marketing means by agents that act on their own. Memory is deliberately short: a new conversation starts empty and [nothing carries over between sessions](https://docs.moveworks.com/harness/agentic-orchestrator/memory), with large tool results held as session variables instead of being pushed into the prompt. Both the Orchestrator and its planning behavior are marked controlled availability, reaching the Enterprise Assistant in Q1 2027, so a buyer evaluating today should ask which engine their tenant will actually run.

## MCP works inbound, and the vendor vets nothing

Moveworks is an MCP client rather than an MCP server for its own platform: an admin connects a remote server in [MCP Workspace](https://docs.moveworks.com/tool-studio/mcp-workspace/overview), the workspace retrieves its tool inventory, and the assistant calls those tools with the configured credentials. Authentication choice decides whose permissions apply, per-user authorization using the employee's own credentials and application credentials using the application's.

Two warnings in the documentation deserve repeating. The first is that Moveworks does not review, approve or vet MCP servers or their tools, and that a server decides which tools and guardrails it exposes, including write and destructive actions. The second is the feature's status: the marketing page for Tool Studio advertises MCP support as a way to bring any system with an MCP server into an agent's reach, while the docs put MCP Workspace in [controlled availability for a limited set of customers](https://docs.moveworks.com/tool-studio/mcp-workspace/connect-a-server) with capabilities and limits liable to change. The documentation site itself does publish an MCP endpoint, at docs.moveworks.com/_mcp/server, but it serves documentation to AI clients and not the assistant's own tools.

## Security evidence is unusually complete, retention is not

The certification list is longer than most: [SOC 2 Type 2, ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 42001, ISO 27017, 27018 and 27701, CSA STAR Level 2, GDPR, CCPA and FedRAMP](https://www.moveworks.com/us/en/platform/security). Hosting is AWS, in named regions (US Commercial, EU, US GovCloud, Canada, Australia, UK, Japan) with data stated to remain in region, and the [API reference](https://docs.moveworks.com/api-reference/overview) backs that with a separate base URL per data center, warning that credentials are registered per data center. On model training the page is explicit: no customer data is used to train global generative models.

What is missing is retention. No configurable retention period or deletion control is published, and the only documented windows are platform-set, such as plugin logs reachable a maximum of fourteen days back. No uptime commitment or service credit scheme is published either, and the certification reports themselves sit behind a Whistic profile the vendor releases through an account executive rather than publicly.

## Low-code in the docs, no code in the marketing

The two halves of the site disagree about how much engineering a build takes. A webinar promotion on the [Tool Studio page](https://www.moveworks.com/us/en/platform/ai-agent-builder) promises specialized assistants across the enterprise "all without a single line of code", and a ServiceNow press release linked from the homepage says every employee can build AI agents, no code required. The same Tool Studio page calls the build environment "a unified, low-code environment" and "a purpose-built, low-code workspace", and the developer docs bear that out: real builds use DSL rules and Data Mappers, two configuration languages with their own references, playground and operator precedence.

## Where it fits, and where it does not

It fits an organization with a busy tier-1 service desk, an ITSM already in place, and chat as the default employee surface. The named [customer evidence](https://www.moveworks.com/us/en/customers) runs that way: BambooHR on ticket volume, Instacart on time to resolution, Coca-Cola Consolidated on not having to grow its service desk.

It fits badly in three cases. A buyer who needs a price before a sales cycle will not get one. A small team cannot start, because there is no self-serve path, no free plan and no published trial. Anyone who needs the platform inside their own infrastructure is out, since hosting is Moveworks-operated AWS and only a connector-side on-prem agent reaches systems in a private network. Contractual retention limits and an uptime commitment are open questions for procurement rather than documented features.

One more contract question: the site positions Moveworks as part of ServiceNow, with a homepage section describing the two "working together as one" and ServiceNow EmployeeWorks presented as built using Moveworks, so pin down which product is being licensed.

## What we checked on Moveworks

### What it costs to start

**What the price counts** · Yes — Priced only on a quote: the pricing page publishes no rate card, no seat price and no usage rate, and routes every buyer to a Moveworks expert for a custom quote shaped around an ROI assessment.

> Connect with a Moveworks expert to request a custom quote and discuss:
> — https://www.moveworks.com/us/en/pricing · Moveworks Pricing page, lead paragraph above the quote request form, checked 28 October 2026

**Free tier** · No — There is no free plan or self-serve sign-up: every route on the site leads to a demo request or a sales conversation for a custom quote.

> Connect with a Moveworks expert to request a custom quote and discuss:
> — https://www.moveworks.com/us/en/pricing · Moveworks Pricing page, lead paragraph above the form, checked 20 September 2026

**Self-serve signup** · No — There is no sign-up path: the pricing page's only action is requesting a custom quote from a Moveworks expert, and the platform and security pages offer a demo or contact sales instead.

> Get started on finding the best agentic AI solution for your business today.
> — https://www.moveworks.com/us/en/pricing · Moveworks Pricing page, call to action above the sales form, checked 28 October 2026

### What it works with

**Works with** · Yes — The assistant searches user-generated content across named systems and acts in them, and the docs enumerate per-system access requirements for ITSM, HRIS, identity, chat and knowledge tools.

> Instantly find user-generated content across systems (Slack, OneDrive, Google Drive, SharePoint, Confluence, Outlook, and 50+ others) and fully automate tasks end-to-end
> — https://www.moveworks.com/ · Homepage, 'One AI front door for work' section, checked 28 October 2026

**Public API** · Yes — Documented REST APIs cover events, conversations and analytics data, authenticated with bearer tokens against a per-data-center base URL.

> Moveworks provides REST APIs to integrate AI-powered automation into your applications and workflows.
> — https://docs.moveworks.com/api-reference/overview · API Reference, opening paragraph, checked 20 September 2026

**MCP server** · Partly — MCP Workspace lets admins connect remote MCP servers so the assistant can call their tools, but it is limited-availability, server-level only, and local servers are unsupported.

> MCP Workspace is available to a limited set of customers. Moveworks is validating the experience and gathering feedback, so capabilities and limits may change.
> — https://docs.moveworks.com/agent-studio/mcp-workspace/overview · Controlled Availability callout at the top, checked 20 September 2026

### What it does on its own

**Acts on its own** · Yes — Ambient agents run in the background on webhook or schedule triggers, monitoring and acting without anyone prompting them first.

> Deploy ambient agents that run in the background — monitoring, triaging, and acting without a prompt.
> — https://www.moveworks.com/us/en/platform/ai-agent-builder · One platform for every kind of agent section, checked 20 September 2026

**Limits on what it may do** · Yes — Policy validators enforce rules deterministically before an action runs, and a native approvals engine can require sequential, parallel or conditional human sign-off.

> Enforces rules deterministically, not through prompts. Validates policy compliance before any action executes.
> — https://www.moveworks.com/us/en/developers · Policy Validator fix block, checked 20 September 2026

**No code needed** · Partly — The vendor calls Tool Studio low-code rather than no-code, and real builds use DSL rules and data mappers, while ToolSmith and marketplace templates let an admin describe or install an agent without writing code.

> A unified, low-code environment for creating every type of AI agent — without managing LLMs, prompts, or dialog flows independently.
> — https://www.moveworks.com/us/en/platform/ai-agent-builder · Tool Studio page, 'Agentic Integrated Development Environment' section, checked 28 October 2026

### What happens to your data

**No training on your data** · Yes — The vendor states customer data is never used to train its global generative models, so there is nothing for a buyer to opt out of.

> No customer data is used to train global generative models.
> — https://www.moveworks.com/us/en/platform/security · AI security and privacy by design, bulleted practices, checked 20 September 2026

**Data stays in your region** · Yes — Seven named AWS regions including EU, UK, Japan, Canada, Australia and US GovCloud, with per-data-center API hosts that confirm the separation.

> Moveworks is hosted in the following AWS regions: US Commercial, EU Commercial, US GovCloud, Canada, Australia, UK, Japan
> — https://www.moveworks.com/us/en/platform/security · AWS is Moveworks' cloud hosting provider block, checked 20 September 2026

**Self-hosted** · No — The platform runs only in Moveworks' AWS tenancy; the On-Prem Agent is a connectivity component for reaching internal systems, not a self-hosted deployment of the product.

> AWS is Moveworks' cloud hosting provider. All customer data remains in its region and is never transferred elsewhere.
> — https://www.moveworks.com/us/en/platform/security · Enterprise-grade security and privacy, AWS hosting block, checked 20 September 2026

**Open source** · No — Nothing in the vendor's developer material offers source code; the platform is a hosted commercial product with docs, marketplace templates and sample configurations only.

> AWS is Moveworks' cloud hosting provider. All customer data remains in its region and is never transferred elsewhere.
> — https://www.moveworks.com/us/en/platform/security · Enterprise-grade security and privacy, AWS hosting block, checked 20 September 2026

**Take your data out** · Partly — Interaction and analytics data can be pulled out through the Data API and SIEM SFTP export, but no contractual exit, deletion or unused-balance term is published.

> Customers can export these logs from SFTP into their internal storage systems or forward them using a SIEM/log forwarder.
> — https://docs.moveworks.com/agent-studio/core-platform/security-information-and-event-management-siem-logs-overview · SIEM Logs Overview, second paragraph, checked 20 September 2026

### Whether a company can buy it

**Security audits** · Yes — The security page names SOC 2 Type 2, ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 42001, ISO 27017, 27018 and 27701, CSA STAR Level 2 and FedRAMP authorization, each with a badge and a one-line scope.

> SOC 2 Type 2 — Security, confidentiality, availability, and privacy TSC
> — https://www.moveworks.com/us/en/platform/security · Industry compliance badge grid, SOC 2 Type 2 entry, checked 28 October 2026
