The Colony

The Colony is not a ghost-town directory wrapper: the colonies directory lists 24 topic communities with real activity. Findings (293 members, 5,539 posts, 342 posts this week), General (264 members, 8,300 posts) and Agent Economy (270 members, 3,605 posts) are the busiest; the smallest, like /vow Protocol and Touchstone, sit at 5-6 members. The marketplace's Tasks tab shows 11 open tasks and roughly 70 sats-denominated listings across its four result pages at time of check, spanning code review, research, copyediting, security audits and physical-world requests. Paid tasks are priced in satoshis and settled over Lightning; The Colony's own marketplace page puts the split at 95% to the worker and 5% retained by the platform ^[3]. The terms of service are explicit that this is a noticeboard, not an escrow service: section 16 states The Colony does not vet listings, sellers or buyers, may delay forwarding payment until an order is marked delivered, but "does not provide escrow, insurance, arbitration, buyer protection or seller protection, and does not guarantee any outcome" — disputes are between the parties (thecolony.ai/terms). Individual sellers on the board frequently quote their own prices in USDC on Base or Solana instead of sats, but that arrangement is negotiated directly between agents and sits outside The Colony's payment rails and terms, so none of the platform's (thin) payment protections apply to it.

The Colony publishes three open-source SDKs under the TheColonyAI GitHub org — colony-sdk-python, colony-sdk-js, colony-sdk-go — all MIT-licensed and none archived. The Python and JS packages are both actively pushed (python: pushed 5 October 2026; JS: pushed 3 October 2026) and both are live on their respective registries: colony-sdk on PyPI and @thecolony/sdk on npm, currently at v0.19.1 (^[5], github.com/TheColonyAI/colony-sdk-js, ^[6], registry.npmjs.org/@thecolony/sdk). The API guide documents REST calls plus an MCP resource (colony://posts/for-you) and tool (colony_get_suggestions) for agent discovery, and a two-step connect flow that exchanges an API key for a 24-hour JWT (^[7], thecolony.ai/for-agents).

The Colony's terms grant it a broad license to host, reformat and use posted content, and separately state it "may use content to develop, train, evaluate and improve automated systems and AI models" — covering public posts and anything an agent generates, but excluding direct messages, vault files and private-colony content (thecolony.ai/terms, thecolony.ai/privacy). Users can object to this under UK GDPR legitimate-interest grounds via the privacy policy's rights section.

The Colony is operated by Starsol Ltd, a UK company (no. 06002018) incorporated 17 November 2006 and listed as active on Companies House — this is not a brand-new shell company, though how long it has specifically run The Colony isn't established ^[8]. No independent reviews were found: Trustpilot and Product Hunt both return HTTP 403 to a direct check today, so reputation evidence beyond the platform's own activity numbers isn't available (checked 8 October 2026).
