Orkas

Orkas is an Electron desktop app (macOS, Windows; Linux by building from source) built around one 'Commander' agent that plans a goal and dispatches it to specialist sub-agents — DeepResearcher, ContentWriter, OfficeWorker, ProductDeveloper, VideoStudio, ImageStudio, UIDesigner, PptMaker, and SeoGeoAgent ship installed; the public marketplace lists roughly 30 agents and 46 skills in total, covering things like Amazon listing research, Notion/Obsidian sync, and tutoring workflows (github.com/Orkas-AI/Orkas README; orkas.ai/views/marketplace/gs/agents/, /gs/skills/). Each sub-agent keeps its own context window rather than sharing one long conversation, which the founder's original launch post frames as the reason for building it: single-agent context bloat on multi-step tasks (Reddit r/AI_Agents launch post, June 2026, via bittide.aicompass.dev mirror).

The security design is unusually candid for a project this size: with your own provider keys, API calls go straight from your machine to the provider and are never proxied through Orkas's servers, keys are AES-256-GCM encrypted at rest, and the vendor explicitly states the threat model the encryption does and doesn't cover — it protects against casual disclosure (a synced backup, a stray log) but not an attacker who already holds your disk and the app binary (orkas.ai/security/). Because the client is MIT-licensed and the repo is public, that claim is checkable rather than asserted — the desktop app also boots without any account layer when built from source. Development is active: 1,455 GitHub stars, 66 forks, created April 2026, with releases roughly every 1–2 weeks through August 2026 (api.github.com/repos/Orkas-AI/Orkas; github.com/Orkas-AI/Orkas/releases), which is faster than most single-founder open-source tools manage.

The desktop app is free with no subscription: bring your own OpenAI/Anthropic/Gemini/DeepSeek/Kimi/GLM/Qwen key and every core feature — Commander, all built-in agents, Claude Code/Codex/OpenCode integration — works without paying Orkas anything (orkas.ai/pricing/). Paid plans exist only to buy 'Orkas credits,' which meter Orkas's own managed-model service (so you don't need a provider key) plus watermark-free generated media, 5GB cloud storage, and multi-device sync: Lite is $11.99/mo (5,000 credits, discounted from a listed $17.99), Pro $19.99/mo (10,000 credits, from $29.99), Max $79.99/mo (50,000 credits, from $129.99), with one-time lifetime-credit packs from $8.99–$10.99 as an alternative to a subscription (orkas.ai/pricing/, verified 2026-08-27). One thing worth checking before paying: the pricing page currently displays 'Dev mode uses Stripe sandbox. Test cards only; no real charge' above the plan cards, which suggests the checkout may still be in a test configuration as of this check.

Orkas's own privacy policy states plainly: 'Your account data and sync data are stored on infrastructure located within mainland China' (orkas.ai/views/legal/privacy.html, §9, last updated 27 July 2026). This only applies if you sign in, enable cloud sync, or use Orkas-managed models/media generation — the BYOK desktop workflow with sync off keeps everything local and this does not apply. For teams with data-residency requirements (EU, regulated industries), this is a material fact to weigh before enabling any account feature, not a reason to avoid the free local-only mode.

The project is young: the GitHub org was created 29 April 2026 and the public launch post on Reddit r/AI_Agents dates to early June 2026 — so as of this check it has roughly four months of public history. Open issues on GitHub are few and appear to get at least one maintainer response (e.g. a Linux startup failure and a Windows/WSL Chinese-input bug were both acknowledged within days: github.com/Orkas-AI/Orkas/issues). There is no independent review, benchmark, or press coverage found beyond aggregator directory listings (Startups.fm, SourceForge mirror, AI-tool-directory sites) and the founder's own launch threads — not established: any third-party comparative evaluation of Orkas's actual multi-agent output quality against competitors.

Orkas is a desktop client for one user on one machine, not a hosted team platform — the vendor's own comparison table and README both say this: no server deployment, and 'remote control and team collaboration are planned' but not shipped (orkas.ai/pricing/ FAQ; orkas.ai homepage comparison table). Linux users get source-only, no packaged installer, requiring Node 20+ and Python 3 to build and run (github.com/Orkas-AI/Orkas README, Quick start). If you want a code-first orchestration framework to embed in your own app (LangChain, CrewAI) or a single focused coding-agent session (Claude Code, Cline), Orkas's own README says explicitly it is not that.
