Synthesia combines a video editor, stock and personal avatars, language support, surveys, and roleplay sessions for organizational communication.
It makes business video from scripts and avatars
Synthesia is positioned as an AI video and avatar platform for business. Its core offer is to create studio-quality videos with AI avatars and voiceovers in more than 140 languages, then use the same service for live roleplay practice and conversational surveys. The product is not limited to a talking-head output. The plan comparison describes personal avatars, interactive videos, translation, screen recording, surveys, branded pages, comments, and collaboration. A team can start with stock avatars and scripts, then use a custom personal avatar where a digital twin is appropriate. The vendor says a personal avatar is created from a sample plus a verification recording, and says the verification step is intended to prevent misuse. The platform description and its privacy policy give the clearest account of these two sides of the product.
Free access is recurring but tightly metered
There is a standing Basic plan at $0 per month, not merely a timed trial. It includes 500 credits each month, with ten minutes of video creation or dubbing and three survey responses. The lowest paid plan is Starter at $29 per month, while Pro is $89 per month. Credits are one shared pool across usage-based features. The vendor cautions that actual use depends on the contents of a video, including avatars, B-roll, motion graphics, and dubbing. That means the minutes implied by a credit balance are an estimate rather than a single fixed production allowance. Starter adds 1,250 monthly credits on top of the free allowance, and Pro adds 6,000. The pricing page also says Basic videos carry a watermark, whereas paid plans can download content and remove the Synthesia logo. Roleplay training is separately priced per learner, so it can add seat costs to a video subscription.
The public APIs cover video and live avatars
Synthesia maintains public reference documentation for four APIs. The Interactive Avatars API renders a lip-synced avatar into a live conversation controlled by the customer. The Video API produces finished scripted videos, dubbing, translations, and templates asynchronously. The Upload API accepts customer assets or script audio, and the Billing API exposes a workspace billing period and credit balance. Plan availability differs by API, so documentation alone does not show that every subscription has every endpoint. The API introduction is explicit about that qualification. For event-driven work, the service sends an HTTP POST request to active subscribed webhooks, signs each event, and retries a failed delivery twice over ten minutes. Details are in the webhook reference. This is a practical integration surface for an application that needs a finished video after asynchronous generation, rather than a generic automation platform.
Enterprise adds central administration and review records
The self-serve product is intentionally small-team in shape. Its plan comparison describes one editor on Basic, Starter, and Pro, with a limited number of guests. The full Admin, Member, and Guest role model is documented for Enterprise, where one organization can group multiple workspaces. An organization administrator can set global controls, turn features off for everyone, or restrict them to selected workspaces. Examples include translations, custom avatars and voices, screen recording, publishing, public pages, and feature-specific access. Organization settings also document controls over API keys and published-video authentication. SAML single sign-on requires an Enterprise plan and involvement from Synthesia support. Audit logs are Enterprise-only, record user and administrator actions, and can be filtered or exported to CSV. Those controls matter for a company that needs centralized oversight, but they are not included in the entry subscription.
Customer content is stored in the EU and can be removed
Synthesia says it operates a multi-tenant SaaS service on AWS. Customer Data is stored in EU data centers in Ireland, with operational backups in Ireland and secondary backups in Frankfurt. The company says customer content can be deleted on request within up to 90 days, and that it can assist with retrieving generated MP4 videos for up to 90 days after a governing agreement ends. These are practical exit and retention statements, though the published material does not describe a buyer-selected residency region. Synthesia also states that it periodically undergoes ISO 42001, ISO 27001, and SOC 2 Type II audits, with its report available through the trust center. The Security Practices page is the vendor source for storage, export, deletion, and audit claims. Buyers considering a Personal Avatar should note a distinct policy: the privacy policy says biometric data is used to fine-tune the model for that avatar.
The company targets workplace learning and communication
Synthesia presents the product primarily for organizations training, informing, and upskilling employees rather than for consumer filmmaking. Its own examples name employee training, internal communications, compliance training, technical training, change management, and sales enablement. In January 2026, the company announced a $200 million Series E at a $4 billion valuation, led by GV, and said it was founded in 2017 with headquarters in London. That funding announcement also describes a direction toward conversational agents for organizational learning, including asking questions, roleplay scenarios, and tailored explanations. Buyers who only need a general video editor may not need the learning, roleplay, organization, and governance layers. The stronger fit is a business team that must create and update repeatable training or communications content across languages.
