What it actually does
Pipedream is two products sharing one platform: Workflows, a serverless step-based automation builder (like Zapier/Make, but you can drop into real Node.js, Python, Go or Bash code at any step instead of being boxed into no-code fields), and Connect, an embeddable managed-auth layer that lets a developer's own app or AI agent authenticate end users into 3,000+ third-party APIs without building OAuth flows themselves. Both surface the same underlying registry of 10,000+ pre-built "tools" (actions/triggers) — that figure and the 3,000+ integrated-app count both appear on the public pricing page's feature comparison table, not just in marketing copy.
MCP support is real and specific, not a checkbox
Pipedream runs a hosted MCP server (mcp.pipedream.com) that exposes its 10,000+ tools to any MCP-compatible client, with a documented OAuth flow, a static server URL (https://mcp.pipedream.net/v2), per-tool read/write/destructive annotations (toolAnnotations) for client-side safety gating, and a documented error-attribution scheme that tells the calling LLM whether a failure originated in the tool's code, the upstream API, or the network layer. This shipped as a dated changelog entry, and Pipedream also publishes Python, TypeScript and Java SDKs for Connect plus docs in both plain-text (llms-full.txt) and markdown form aimed at being consumed by coding agents.
Pricing: transparent, credit-metered, and cheap at low volume
Five tiers, all published with real numbers on pipedream.com/pricing: Free ($0/mo, 100 credits/mo, 1M AI tokens, 3 active workflows, 3 connected accounts); Basic ($29/mo billed annually at $348/yr, 2,000 credits/mo); Advanced ($49/mo billed annually at $588/yr, 2,000 credits/mo, unlimited workflows and connected accounts); Connect ($99/mo billed annually at $1,188/yr, 10,000 credits/mo, Connect in production, auth for 100 external users included then $2 per additional user); and Business (custom, volume pricing, HIPAA support, uptime SLAs). A credit is 1 unit per 30 seconds of compute at the default 256MB memory tier; doubling memory to 512MB doubles the credit cost for the same runtime, and triggers that fire a downstream workflow aren't double-charged. Monthly (non-annual) prices are shown on the same page toggle but weren't captured here — the annual figures above are the ones the page defaults to.
The code is not open source, and the GitHub star count overstates what that gets you
The public repo (github.com/PipedreamHQ/pipedream, 11,680 stars, 5,780 forks as of this check) is licensed under Pipedream's own "Source Available License v1.0," not MIT or Apache — it explicitly forbids using the software for any competing SaaS/PaaS/IaaS offering. The repo is overwhelmingly the connector/component registry (thousands of per-app action and trigger definitions), which is what most of those stars and forks reflect; the workflow execution engine itself runs only as Pipedream's hosted service. There's no path to self-hosting the core product under this license.
Repo activity
The repo is actively maintained by the vendor, not community-driven in the open-source sense: as of September 9, 2026 the most recent push was same-day, and the most recent merged pull requests (checked via the GitHub API) were opened and merged by Pipedream staff (author association COLLABORATOR) within minutes, batch-publishing AI-optimized connector components. Open issue count is high (4,400 open) relative to a connector-registry repo of this size, consistent with a public tracker for thousands of third-party API integrations rather than a sign of neglect.
Security and compliance: unusually well documented for this tier of vendor
Pipedream publishes a detailed security page (not a marketing summary) covering: SOC 2 Type II compliance with reports available on request, continuous compliance monitoring via Drata with a public Drata security report, annual third-party penetration testing, a GDPR Data Protection Addendum with Standard Contractual Clauses and a public subprocessor list, HIPAA support via signed BAAs (with a dedicated HIPAA docs page), AWS us-east-1 hosting with AWS KMS-managed AES-256-GCM encryption at rest, TLS in transit, and JWT-based (ED25519-signed) OAuth access tokens that expire after 1 hour. This is meaningfully more than the "enterprise-grade security" line most vendors of this size publish.
Company and funding — not independently verifiable today
Pipedream's own about page and Wikipedia carried no usable company/funding detail as fetched, and Crunchbase blocked automated access with a CAPTCHA challenge; web search was unavailable for this entire research session (all providers failed). Founded in 2019 per its GitHub repo creation date; no funding round, investor, or headcount figure could be independently confirmed today. Any funding claim seen elsewhere about Pipedream should be treated as unverified until checked against a primary source (SEC filing, official announcement) in a session where search or Crunchbase actually works.

Check the workflow and account ceilings on the lower tiers before committing. Free allows 3 active workflows and 3 connected accounts, Basic raises that to 10 workflows and 5 accounts, and Connect is the tier for production Pipedream Connect with 100 external users.
